Gulf Power Company always prepares for tropical storm events, knowing systems can spin up quickly and unexpectedly. This time the Panhandle was largely spared from the harsher impacts that fast-moving Tropical Storm Nestor could have delivered.

Gulf Power crews responded quickly overnight, restoring power to approximately 3,500 customers, mostly in the Panama City area. The average restoration time was approximately 30 minutes.

“Our crews remain at the ready to restore power to our customers as Nestor’s final bands move through our area this morning,” said Marlene Santos, president of Gulf Power. “For customers impacted by the storm, we thank you for your patience as our crews worked overnight to get your lights back on.”

  • Nearly 460,000 Gulf Power customers were in the path of Tropical Storm Nestor
  • More than 3,500 customers restored
  • Peak number of outages was just over 1,200 customers at any given time during the storm
  • Average customer was restored in just over 30 minutes, and no outage lasted more than 3 hours.
  • Approximately 200 additional line and tree-clearing workers were brought in to assist with restoration efforts in preparation for storm impact
  • “Nestor serves as a reminder that we are still in hurricane season and we must remain vigilant,” said Santos. “We urge our customers to continue to stay safe and please ensure you and your family are prepared should another storm strike this year.”

When should you call Gulf Power?
If a customer’s power goes out, we know about it. However, if a customer does not see their outage reflected on the outage map, they should report their outage at OutageMap.GulfPower.com, call Gulf Power at 1-800-GUPOWER (1-800-487-6937) or on the Gulf Power Mobile App. Customers should also call 911 to report the location of downed power lines or sparking electrical equipment.

Post Storm Safety
Even when winds have subsided, you may still encounter dangerous conditions. We urge customers in stormy and flooded areas to please take the following safety precautions:

  • Stay far away from downed power lines, flooding and debris; lines could be energized and dangerous.
  • Use caution while driving. Power interruptions may cause traffic signals to stop working without warning. If you come to an intersection with a non-working traffic signal, Florida law requires that you treat it as a four-way stop.
  • Please heed Florida’s Move Over Law that requires drivers to move over and slow down whenever there is a utility worker, law enforcement officer or a first responder on the side of the road.
